There are places you visit… and then there are places that stay with you.
The Amalfi Coast is one of those places.
When I went with my niece, it wasn’t just about checking off Positano or Capri. It was the feeling of the place. The winding roads. The scent of lemons in the air. The way every view makes you stop mid-sentence and just stare.
And if I’m being honest with you, it’s also one of those destinations that looks effortless on Instagram… but takes a little strategy to truly enjoy.
So this isn’t just a guide. This is what it’s actually like, plus what I’d want you to know before you go.

WHAT TO DO (BEYOND THE OBVIOUS)
Start in Sorrento (and don’t rush it)
Sorrento is often overlooked for Positano, but it’s the perfect starting point.
One of my favorite moments from the trip was something so simple. Sitting by the water with my niece, enjoying fresh lemon sorbet served inside an actual lemon. It sounds small, but it was one of those “this is Italy” moments that just sticks with you.
It’s also:
- easier to navigate than Positano
- a great base for day trips
- slightly more budget-friendly
Advisor tip: I often recommend starting here for 2–3 nights before moving further down the coast.

Do a Boat Day in Capri (this is non-negotiable)
If you do nothing else, do this.
Capri was, without a doubt, one of our favorite parts of the entire trip. It truly felt like something out of a movie. The water was unreal, the cliffs were dramatic, and everything about it felt surreal.
Seeing Capri by boat is a completely different experience than being on land. You’re gliding past rock formations, hidden caves, and water so clear it doesn’t even look real.
This was easily one of our favorite days together.
- Blue Grotto is incredible if open
- Smaller boats feel more intimate
- You can swim right off the boat
Advisor tip: If your budget allows, a private or small group boat is absolutely worth it. It’s one of those core memory experiences.

Wander Positano (but prepare yourself)
Positano is that girl. It’s everything you see online.
But here’s what people don’t tell you…
It is BEAUTIFUL… and it is a WORKOUT.
We had no idea how much walking was involved. What looked like a quick walk to dinner turned into multiple flights of stairs, steep inclines, and stopping halfway just to catch our breath.
And honestly, we laughed through it, but it was definitely a surprise. The views are worth every step, but you need to be prepared.
Advisor tip: Hotel location matters a lot here. I always help clients choose based on mobility, not just aesthetics.
Escape to Ravello (your quiet moment)
If Positano feels busy and Capri feels glamorous, Ravello feels peaceful.
Perched high above the coast, it’s where you go to slow down. The bus ride there is winding and a little intense, but once you arrive, it’s calm, quiet, and absolutely breathtaking.
Think:
- peaceful gardens
- panoramic views without the crowds
- a slower, more relaxed pace
It felt like a completely different side of the Amalfi Coast.

Take the Chair Lift to Monte Solaro
If you have time while in Capri, take the single-seat chair lift up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. It’s such a peaceful, almost surreal experience. You’re slowly lifted above the island, passing over rooftops, gardens, and open landscape, with the most incredible views unfolding the higher you go.
At the top, you get panoramic views of the entire coastline, the sea, and even neighboring islands. It was one of those moments where you just stop and take it all in.
It’s simple, a little unexpected, and absolutely worth it.
WHAT TO EAT
Food here is not just meals. It’s an experience.
- Lemon everything
- From limoncello to lemon pasta to desserts, it’s everywhere and it’s actually good.
- Fresh seafood
- spaghetti alle vongole
- seafood risotto
- grilled fish caught that day
- Pizza near Naples
- You’re near the birthplace of pizza, so expect simple ingredients done perfectly.
- The little moments
- Espresso at a standing bar. Gelato while walking through town.
- Those ended up being some of their favorite memories.

WHAT NO ONE REALLY TELLS YOU
The stairs are REAL
This was probably our biggest surprise.
You will walk. A lot.
And not flat walking… stairs on stairs on stairs.
Bring: comfortable shoes, patience, and maybe skip the heels
Getting around takes longer than you think
Those scenic roads are also:
- narrow
- winding
- traffic-heavy
A short drive can easily turn into much longer.
Pack light
Trust me on this one. Dragging a large suitcase up stairs in Positano is not the move.
Planning matters here
This is not a last-minute destination.
- hotels sell out early
- the best rooms go first
- prices increase quickly
This is where planning ahead really makes a difference.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it’s not the easiest.
And that’s exactly what makes it special.
It slows you down. It makes you pause. It forces you to be present.
For me and my niece, it wasn’t just the views we remember. It was:
- laughing halfway up the stairs
- that first bite of fresh seafood by the water
- the feeling of being somewhere completely different from everyday life
And if you’re thinking about going, I’ll say this:
This is one of those trips where how you plan it makes all the difference.
