New York City with my boys

November 20, 2023

For winter break 2023, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure with my two boys, Micah and Elijah. The excitement in their eyes was infectious as we explored the towering skyscrapers, visited Central Park and devoured delicious street food…it was a day filled with adventure and discovery.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we decided to take the subway to meet up with my sister but accidentally got on the wrong train. After exiting the train at the next stop, a friendly commuter noticed we needed help and without a second thought, I stepped back onto the train to ask my question.

My heart plummeted as I turned around to see the subway doors closing. Panic surged through my veins as the train began to pull away from the platform. I was inside, and my sons were on the platform, their eyes wide with fear as they realized that they had been left behind.

Inside the subway car, I felt a wave of terror – panic surged through my veins as I thought of all the things that could go wrong with my boys all by themselves. During that anxious wait on the train, a fellow passenger, who had seen what happened and could see the turmoil in my eyes, helped me figure out the right train to take back so I could reunite with my children.

As the train came to a halt, and I stepped on to the platform, my heart trembling with worry and guilt. The sight of Micah and Elijah, safe and sound, filled my heart with overwhelming relief. As I rushed to my boys, our tearful reunion overflowed with hugs and reassurances. The experience had shaken all three of us to our very core, serving as a stark reminder of how quickly a joyful adventure could turn into a nightmare.

Amid the chaos and fear, there was a glimmer of hope. A Good Samaritan, a guardian angel in the sea of commuters, had spotted the frightened boys and stayed with them. This kind stranger escorted them to the other side of the platform, ensuring they remained safe and secure until my return.

As we continued our New York adventure, we did so with a newfound appreciation for our togetherness and the kindness of strangers. It served as a lesson on the importance of staying together in a bustling city like New York and keeping a watchful eye on the closing subway doors. It also reinforced the kindness of strangers and the importance of helping one another in times of crisis.

Moral of the Story:

When traveling as a family, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and communication.

Here are some important tips to consider:

Stay Together: Always stick together as a family, especially in crowded and unfamiliar places like subways or busy streets. Hold hands or set clear guidelines to ensure everyone stays close.

Watch the Doors: Pay close attention to closing doors, whether on subways, buses, or any form of transportation. Make sure everyone is safely on board before the doors close.

Emergency Contact: Teach your children how to contact you or ask for help if they ever get separated. Make sure they know your phone number and have a plan in case of separation.

Kindness of Strangers: Trust in the kindness of strangers but remain vigilant. Encourage your children to seek help from uniformed personnel or security if they become separated from you.

Reunite Point: Establish a designated meeting point in case of separation. Teach your children to wait here if they ever get lost, making it easier for you to find them.

Remember, family adventures are meant to create cherished memories, and with a little preparation and vigilance, they can be safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
